Annual junior livestock show begins Thursday

The 85th annual Churchill County Junior Livestock Show begins Thursday at the Rafter 3C Arena.

Prior to this weekend’s show, exhibitors from the 4-H and FFA programs walked the town Friday, stopping in at local businesses by inviting merchants to their livestock show.

The junior livestock show offers the area’s 4-H and FFA students from both Churchill County High School and Oasis Academy to exhibit the skills learned in different areas such as project management, decision-making and project evaluation.

On the first day, exhibitors will bring their breeding animals for show, and during the afternoon, market animals will be weighed, said Karen Bogdanowicz, a community-based instructor with the University of Nevada’s Reno Extension program.

This year’s show and sale consist of swine, sheep, beef, goat and poultry as well as showmanship and all the breeding stock classes.

Bogdanowicz said Friday offers the market animal formats, and Saturday includes the show, a luncheon for the buyers and the auction at 1 p.m.

During the show, Bogdanowicz judges grade students for their showmanship with overall winners in each livestock category announced on Saturday. The auction begins after potential buyers have the morning to look at the animals designated for sale.

This event allows the community’s youth to exhibit skills they have learned in their various projects such as project management, decision-making and project evaluation. Bogdanowicz said the show and sale offers both the community and buyers the opportunity to encourage and reward the area who are engaged with their various projects.
